Human Crafted Foundation Mission
Make the contribution visible.
Keep the knowledge in use.
Human Crafted connects two responsibilities: recognising the human contribution within cultural works and sustaining the knowledge through which people create.
Creative agency
An audience encounters a finished work. Behind it lie acts of observation, interpretation, invention and judgement.
Human Crafted asks who made the creative decisions, where authorship resides and what knowledge shaped the expression of the work.
Creative provenance
A meaningful account of a work identifies the people involved, their contributions and the tools they used. It makes the process intelligible to an audience and acknowledges the responsibilities of its authors.
The proposed framework will explore how these accounts can be documented without imposing an unreasonable burden on creative practice.
People and technology
Human Crafted is not opposed to AI. AI may form part of human creative processes.
The relevant question is the nature of the human contribution: which decisions people made, what judgement they exercised and how that contribution can be understood.
Cultural sustainability
Creative knowledge passes between people through teaching, rehearsal, shared work and sustained practice. Its continuity depends on opportunities to exercise it.
Our mission extends to the conditions through which this knowledge can be learned, practised and renewed as technologies change.
